Appear TV's intelligent redundancy software provides seamless integration between broadcast equipment and IP networks. The software is unique in being the only solution in the IP television market to take a holistic view of operation and network management. Redundancy configurations are simplified and automated, and operational routines are significantly reduced.

Appear TV's holistic approach is built upon a single software core capable of handling failures on both inputs and outputs. Appear TV's redundancy offers operators using IP for video distribution significant quality of service benefits and improved network efficiency. The system provides automatic backup in case of service stream failure on an operator's network, without requiring complex control software (NMS). Selected solutions in the Appear TV redundancy suite are described below.

Input Redundancy
Input redundancy is designed to monitor failures external to Appear TV systems that may be indicated by link loss, the absence of a bitrate, missing PMT, etc. The Appear TV chassis is configured with two inputs, one configured to serve as the main service, and the other as backup. In the event of input source failure, the input source is switched automatically. The solution works between different module types; for example a satellite input service can be set up as the backup for an IP input service.

Seamless IP Redundancy
Seamless IP redundancy is an input redundancy solution for IP, providing outstanding network failure protection with redundant/ring distribution networks. The system protects against both networks failure and packet loss, providing an equivalent of 100% FEC. The system is designed to synchonize inputs with different networks latencies, and allows seamless (hitless) switching in the event of a network failure. The Dual IPIO module supports seamless switching of up to 250 input services.

IP Output Redundancy
The IP output redundancy system presents a network with multiple sources from which it is possible to obtain the same service. Using standard network routing protocols, the network itself will switch between the main and spare outputs in a 1+1 redundant headend.

Internal N+1 Redundancy
The XC5000 chassis provides an advanced, self-contained, redundancy solution. The chassis comes with two internal backplane networks, where installed modules may communicate on both backplanes. This way all critical components are duplicated in a 1+1 redundant setup, removing all single points of failure from the chassis. Using the management interface, identical modules are set up in main or spare mode, allowing services from a failed module to be moved to the spare module automatically. The solution is targeted for encoding and transcoding solutions where the cost benefits of N+1 redundancy are most significant.
